BROOD V.1
This body of work was made during the COVID 19 lockdown which, being battery powered, felt relevant.
We didn’t know what the future held.
This collection of isolated life forms is intended to suggest that nature has been hijacked, and these specimens are created by being cloned.
Replications of a new genus perhaps.
The ‘species’ are made from liquid silicone rubber, to which I add colour and mould in various ways.
These fictitious forms are then suspended in transparent silicone. They appear to be incubating, getting ready to hatch or germinate.
My intention is for them to appear convincingly real, but a little discomforting.
The acrylic containers resemble bulkhead lights which appear in science fiction film environments, or in the murky world of the industrial facility.
I added a backlight to suggest that they need a different kind of energy other than the sun to develop, and could prosper in any environment.
The titles are a playful attempt at scientific provenance.
The led backlights are powered by two rechargeable batteries.
